A pedestal fan, or standing fan, is a typically taller device that stands on a pedestal to raise it from the floor. An air cooler is often larger than a standing or tower fan and works by evaporating water to cool the air. The air cooler pulls warm air from the room through a vent at the back of the unit. The air is then passed through a saturated cooling pad which has been soaked in water. The warm air evaporates some of the water in the pad, thereby cooling the air. The cooled air is then circulated back into the room as a cooling breeze; they are not designed to significantly reduce the room temperature.
